Free Kinneil House tours this Saturday

7arbourroom-kinneilhouse-rgb-300dpi (2)Historic Kinneil House in Bo’ness is opening its doors for free tours this Saturday (September 19, 2015). The event will be complemented by a Roman family fun day in the grounds – part of the Big Roman Week festival.

The mansion will be open from noon to 3 p.m. with the last admission at 2.30 p.m.

The building, which boasts some of the best renaissance wall paintings in Scotland, was once home to Dukes of Hamilton. It dates back to the 15th century.

The building’s surrounding Kinneil Estate includes the remains of a Roman fortlet, once part of the Antonine Wall; a medieval church; and a cottage workshop used by the inventor James Watt. There is also the free Kinneil Museum, which will be open on Saturday afternoon.

The Roman fun day will see the Antonine Guard re-enactment group set up camp in front of the House. There will also be Roman table top war games and some Roman craft sessions for children. The fun day will get fully underway at 1 p.m. and run until 4 p.m. (Please note the House will close earlier, with the last admission at 2.30 p.m.)
