THE Big Roman Day at Kinneil on Saturday has been hailed as a hit.

The event – supporting Big Roman Week, Doors Open Days and the Scottish Archaeology and Heritage Festival – attracted big crowds.

More than 420 people visited Kinneil House in just three hours  on Saturday – and a similar number visited Kinneil Museum. Organisers say even more people were in the surrounding parkland to see the Antonine Guard Roman re-enactment group set up camp and put on military displays.

Organisers The Friends of Kinneil also set up a “dress up” stall to help children get into Roman costume and helped youngsters create Roman art in clay. There were also fundraising stalls for The Friends, which works to promote develop Kinneil House, Museum and Estate and the neighbouring Kinneil Nature Reserve.

Falkirk District Wargames Club (FDWC) and the Britannia XIV Medieval Re-enactment group also had stalls at the event.

A spokesperson said: “It was a great afternoon. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves. A big thanks to Falkirk Council, Historic Scotland and Falkirk Community Trust who supported the event, and all the participants and volunteers who made the open day one of our best ever.”
